Winnie Ice Fishing Report

12-15 inches of good ice as of 12.19.2010. We traveled by 4 wheeler out of the birches landing. There was a stretch of really rough ice approx 200 yards in length. We fished a point coming off shoreline in 16-20 foot. The walleyes fishing was very good. Nice keepers in the 14-16 inch range. The Northland Buckshoot spoons in a gold or silver worked best. Jigging them 2-3 feet of the bottom with a minnow head was key. Best bite started around 4:00 PM. When the fish got active, we could only fish one line.
I expect vehcile traffic in the next day of so. We have a large snow storm moving in on us now that could cause some problems with travel. The Winnie fishing should remain good for another couple of weeks and then look for the prime bite to happen during the 1 hour at first and last light.

Ice Updates

Ice conditions continue to improve with a number of lakes showing 9-14 inches. From Winnie to Leech, Red and Lake of the woods, one should have plenty of ice to get out and enjoy ice fishing. Pokegama is in the 8-11 inch range. Looking to get out this weekend, finally plenty of ice for me.

Ice Updates

Ice conditions are now fishable. I have not been on the ice, but have reports from a number of anglers who did get out over the weekend and they are reporting on most lakes 4-7 inches. It sounds like there is still some slush issues around shore and even some ice piles. With the temperature forecast being cold all week, look for great conditions by next weekend.
Time to get out for those early ice eye’s~

Ice Updates

Ice conditions continue to improve. Last night we seen temps drop down to 8-10 below zero. Still some concerns on many of the smaller lakes with slush and we may see some shoreline slush with the larger lakes as we get out there. With the forecast being cold and lows in the single digits most of next week, we should have good ice by next weekend.
Friends are telling me that we have 3-4 inches in the Third River area on Winnie, the main lake has locked up over the last couple of days.
Pokegama is still working on locking up completely.

Continue to be smart and use caution if heading out. Next weekend should be better timing for those first ice adventures~
