The ice has officially left the area lakes here in the Northland. As of Tuesday or Wednesday, Leech and Winnie are basically ice free. This just means post spawn walleyes and spot tail shiners.
Look for those walleyes to be a bit more active as we should see water temperatures much warmer then what we had last year. I think many more anglers will find better schools of eater fish versus the bigger fish that we experienced last opener.
On Wednesday from 4-7 PM stop down to Glens Army Navy as we will be holding a casting contest for the kids and will be available to help pick out those rods and reels or others pieces of equipment needed for the upcoming opener and season. Glens will have a number of specials going on for the pre-season kick off including free line for those purchasing a reel. Ray's Sport and Marine will also have some boats to look at and I will have my boat there for anyone that may have some questions regarding set up or wants to see the new Verado with the big tiller system.
So with the water on the warm up and many of the walleyes completing the annual spawn, a shallow water jig bite should take top honors again this year on many of our lakes. Look for the walleyes to be actively feeding in the 4-8 feet of water and possibly 10 feet of water. As the day starts to warm, look for the fish to slowly move shallower and look for the jigging motion to be jigged more than dragged.
Keeping the jig light will be key. 1/16 oz. to 1/8 oz. should be all one needs. Look for those areas where weed growth happens during the heat of the summer to be area holding schools of hungry walleyes. Many times in these areas, the new weed growth can be just starting to poke through the sand and this will be enough to hold shiners. Finding those shiners will increase the activity on the end of your pole.
So as we count down to opener, don't forget to stop into Glens on May 6th from 4-7 PM as there will be a number of prizes for the kids casting contest along with a number of other giveaways.
See you on the water soon,
