Another week of cool weather and those water temperatures continue to stay cooler then normal. The water temperatures are hovering around the 58 to 60 degree mark making those shallow water bites hard to come by consistently.
Many of the area lakes are certainly behind schedule as far as water temperatures are concerned. With the cooler water comes slow weedgrowth, which typically plays a huge role in early season success. Concentrating on the weedgrowth areas have been key again this week, but more importantly is finding schools of baitfish. The baitfish on most area lakes seem to be holding in the 10-12 foot of water.
Leech lake has been my main body fished again this week as we are finding the most consistent action on Leech. We again are using a jig and shiner or a jig and Berkley Gulp. With the fish schooling up in 11-12 feet of water and the fish wanting the jig snapped, the Gulp has not only increased the amount of fish we are catching per bait but it also has allowed us to increase the size of our jigs to 1/8 and 1/4 oz.
We have found that both the Northland Fireball and Gumball jigs work well with the Gulp. While using the Berkley Gulp, make sure to keep the bait threaded on the hook so the nose of the bait is always in contact with your jig head. A great way to help keep the bait in place is taking the time to place a small bead of super glue on the plastic before threading it on. It helps if you glue up a few the night before, but it will only take about 5 minutes or so once a small bead of super glue is applied.
Look for the Salmo Hornet bite to get better each day as the fish are really wanting to chase on Leech lake. While in the 11-13 feet of water look for the #5 Salmo Hornet to work best. Expect to run 80 to 120 feet of line while working the 11-13 feet of water.
Winnie continues to be challenging as one day the fish seem to be starting to come alive and then the wind switches and the bite falls asleep for a day or two. The fish mainly are coming from the 9-11 feet on Winnie with an occasional fish showing themselves in that preferred 6-8 feet. I would expect to see Winnie get going shortly as the shiners are truly trying to get to that shallow water, but in order for that to happen, we really need to see a few warmer days and nights. The frost and freeze warnings clearly are not helping Winnie at this point.
Before heading to the water, make sure to get yourself some of the Berkley Gulp, it will amaze you how well it works and how much the fish like it. The best selection in the area can be found at Glen's Army Navy, or if you can't stop in visit them at www.glensarmynavystore.com
