The second week of warm weather now is past us and most of the Winnie walleyes have made that big movement from the summer depths to the shallow shoreline weedbeds and flats located on the North and East shorelines of Winnie.
With the fish concentrating themselves on the shorelines we continue to find the best activity coming on Salmo #4 hornets and those spinners tipped with crawlers. A jig a minnow bite has started to pick up fish when the spinners and hornets seem to slow, but heading to the lake with these three presentation will catch you the fish needed for the walleye dinner or fish fry.
For the Salmo #4 Hornets, the speed is making all the difference in the world as the fish seem to want the bait moving at 2.3 to 2.5 MPH, we have had much less success this week when slowing down to the typical 2.0 MPH. As for depths, we have found the most action in the 6 1/2 to 8 feet of water or just on the outside of the primary weed edges. The colors again that seem to be the best are the Viking, pearl orange, hot perch and blue dace. Glen's has the entire selection in stock, don't head to the lake without them.
As for the spinners with crawlers, we have found again this week that the hammered deep Colorado #4 silver and gold to be the hot producers. Here we are running the spinners behind 1 oz. inline bottom bouncer at 1.3 to 1.8 MPH. When running the crawlers, a two hook harness with a half of crawler is all one needs. Drop the rod tip every 10-15 seconds and watch the fish trigger more often and typically more aggressively.
Keep in mind that if the wind is light or calm those fish that are in the shallows seem to pull to the secondary break which on Winnie is typically in the 10-14 foot of water. One again can continue to catch them with crankbaits and spinners, but a jig and minnow will also increase the action while out in the deeper water.
We are starting to see the water temperatures pushing the upper 60's again this week, but the forecasted cool down should hold the walleyes in that shallow water for a period of time yet and I would expect to see another great Fall bite as I think most of the fish will hang shallow now through ice up.
Keep in mind that the September full moon is coming soon and those September full moon bites are filled with bigger bites and this one could be fun. I will be reporting on Both Winnie and Leech for the remainder of the Fall as I will be hitting both of them regularly.
Good luck out there and keep those speeds up and make sure to get your fill of Hornets and spinners at Glen's before heading to the lake and don't forget about the Mr. Walleye fish batter for that perfect fish fry after a fun day of fishing.
See you on the water,
