With most anglers finding other activities to tie them over at this time of the year, no better time than the current to get out there to find some big walleyes. Most of the walleyes on nearly all the lakes are round like footballs because of the heavy feeding they have been doing over the last month and on many of the lakes they are still active and extremely frisky.

We have started to see some fish move into the deeper waters with the water temperatures moving into the mid 40's. With these water temperatures cooling, look for a much slower or swimming action to be the presentation of choice on those jigs and minnows. Many of the fish are now starting to locate on the 16-20 foot primary points on the lakes and also starting to find some early movement to those deep water humps that typically produce so well during that first ice season.

This time of the year one of the best shallow water options on most lakes in our area comes after dark, and this last week proved to be another great Fall outing. We found ourselves trolling the shorelines of Leech lake, I must say that Leech lake has a very healthy population of fish with good numbers of strong year classes. I had a great time fishing with my daughter on these night outings. My daughter was able to experience an incredible night bite and she was able to catch 6 walleyes over the 26" mark and to top it off she is begging me to go more. I guess she has the fishing in her blood already and nothing make me more happy.

We landed nearly 150 walleyes in three nights with 50-60 of these fish over the 26" mark. Next seaon I will be guiding regularly after dark on Leech lake and will be looking at the September and October full moons for those interested. It was the best big fish action that I have ever experienced and if you are up to catching big ones, this trip will certainly be one for you.

While fishing Leech we have found the active big fish wanting the #12 Salmo stings in the 5-7 feet of water. Here we found that while trolling the #12 stings that 85 to 95 foot of line is all one needs while moving at 2.0 MPH. The color combinations that seem to be most preferred is gold metallic orange or metallic clown.

If you are looking to head out after dark, dress in layers and wearing a life jacket will not only help if something happens but it will also help keep you warm.

Deer season is just a couple weeks away and this will likely be my last open water report for the 2008 season. Now we are looking for that first ice and I will be getting those ice fishing tips until we can head out and get all of you back to reports from the ice.

See you on the water in a Lund Boat,
